U.S. Exports and Imports for Consumption of Merchandise by Customs District: 1980 to 2006

The Statistical Abstract files are distributed by the US Census Department as Microsoft Excel files. These files have data mixed with notes and references, multiple tables per sheet, and, worst of all, the table headers are not easily matched to their rows and columns.

A few files had extraneous characters in the title. These were corrected to be consistent. A few files have a sheet of crufty gibberish in the first slot. The sheet order was shuffled but no data were changed.

The tables that were changed (this is table 1274):

This dataset consists of a table of 62 rows and 49 columns.

In billions of dollars (220.8 represents $220,800,000,000). Exports are f.a.s. (free alongside ship) vlue all years; imports are on customs-value basis for years 1985 to present; f.a.s. value basis for 1980. For methodology, see Foreign Trade Statistics in Appendix III

  1. Totals shown for exports reflect the value of estimated parcel post
and Special Category shipments, and beginning 1987, adjustments for
undocumented exports to Canada are not distributed by coastal area
or customs district. Beginning 1985, the value of bituminous coal
exported through Norfolk, VA; Charleston, SC; and Mobile, AL is
reflected in the total but not distributed by district.
  2. Beginning 1985, excludes exports of bituminous coal.
