Overview

The Social Security Administration Death Master File (SSA DMF) contains over 83 million records of deaths that have been reported to the Social Security Administration. The file includes the following information on each decedent, if the data are available to the Social Security Administration:

  • Social Security Number
  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Date of Death
  • State or Country of Residence (2/88 and prior)
  • ZIP Code of Last Residence
  • ZIP Code of Lump Sum Payment

The file was published by the National Technical Information Service on September 3, 2010. Please note, the Social Security Administration DMF is a raw data file with fixed-length fields as described in “Record Layout Specification” below. If you have trouble unzipping the file because of its size, you can open it with 7-Zip, which is free software.
