Dataset

The projections are based on assumptions about future childbearing, mortality, and migration. The level of childbearing among women is assumed to remain close to present levels, with differences by race and Hispanic origin diminishing over time. Mortality is assumed to decline gradually with less variation by race and Hispanic origin than at present. International migration is assumed to vary over time and decrease generally relative to the size of the population. The Census defines the U.S. resident population as including persons resident in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. These estimates exclude residents of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and residents of the Island areas under U.S. sovereignty or jurisdiction (principally American Samoa, Guam, United States Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). The definition of residence conforms to the criteria used in Census 2000, which defines a resident of a specified area as a person “usually resident” in that area. Estimates of the resident population exclude the U.S. Armed Forces overseas, as well as civilian U.S. citizens whose usual place of residence is outside the United States. This resident data is categorized by race, Hispanic-origin, and age-projections. The term Hispanic is independent of race in the data.

Format

The Statistical Abstract files are distributed by the US Census Department as Microsoft Excel files. These files have data mixed with notes and references, multiple tables per sheet, and, worst of all, the table headers are not easily matched to their rows and columns.

A few files had extraneous characters in the title. These were corrected to be consistent. A few files have a sheet of crufty gibberish in the first slot. The sheet order was shuffled but no data were changed.
