OpenStreetMap
Overview
OpenStreetMap (OSM) is aimed at creating and providing free geodata such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive or unexpected ways.
The planet.osm file described at the download link above is formatted according to OSM’s own XML schema. It is "a snapshot of the latest revision of the nodes, segments, and ways in the database. A new version is released weekly.
