The Statistical Abstract files are distributed by the US Census Department as Microsoft Excel files. These files have data mixed with notes and references, multiple tables per sheet, and, worst of all, the table headers are not easily matched to their rows and columns.

A few files had extraneous characters in the title. These were corrected to be consistent. A few files have a sheet of crufty gibberish in the first slot. The sheet order was shuffled but no data were changed.

This dataset consists of a table of 67 rows and 20 columns.

For years ending Sept. 30. Participation data are average monthly number participating in year ending September 30. (26,619 represents 26,619,000); except national school lunch data prior to 1989 are for month in which the highest number of children participated nationwide. National school lunch outlets include public and private elementary and secondary schools and residential child care institutions. Food stamp costs are for benefits only and exclude administrative expenditures. National school lunch program costs are for federal cash reimbursements at rates set by law for each meal served; they do not include the value of USDA donated commodities utilized in this program


  1. Includes Guam and the Virgin Islands. Several outlying areas receive nutrition assistance grants in lieu of food stamp
    (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the Northern Marianas).
