The Statistical Abstract files are distributed by the US Census Department as Microsoft Excel files. These files have data mixed with notes and references, multiple tables per sheet, and, worst of all, the table headers are not easily matched to their rows and columns.

A few files had extraneous characters in the title. These were corrected to be consistent. A few files have a sheet of crufty gibberish in the first slot. The sheet order was shuffled but no data were changed.

This dataset consists of a table of 16 rows and 59 columns.

Civilian employment as a percent of the civilian working-age population. Data based on U.S. labor force definitions (see source) except that minimum age for population base varies as United States, France, Sweden, Canada (beginning 1976) and United Kingdom (beginning 1973), 16 years; Australia, Canada (ending 1975), Japan, Netherlands, Germany, Italy (beginning 1993), and United Kingdom (ending 1972), 15 years; and Italy (prior to 1993), 14 years
