Baby names: boys names from England and Wales, 1996 to 2010
Overview
Counts of boys names from England and Wales, by birth year, from 1996 to 2010. The data was originally published by the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS).
1996 to 2009 data available here: http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-reference-tables.html?edition=tcm%3A77-49222
2010 data available here: http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-reference-tables.html?edition=tcm%3A77-225089
The data are sorted by average frequency of names, and include two special rows.
Where the name is "__UNKNOWN__", this indicates cases where no names appeared on the birth registration form.
Where the only one or two instances of a name occured in that year, these were combined into a single value with name "__RARE__". Note that this means that any zeroes in the dataset do not necessarily mean zero – they could be ones or twos. Thus counts for very uncommon names are not accurate.
There are some odd names, for example those with a trailing hyphen (e.g., “mark-”), single letter names (e.g., “a”) and those which include full-stops (e.g., “a.j.”). The ONS consider these names to be legal.
