This is the 2008 play-by-play data collected by the volunteers of the Football Outsiders Game Charting Project. That’s nearly every play of nearly every game, except in rare cases where technical problems prevented us from marking data. We’ve marked the standard information like down, distance, and yardage gained, but you also get charting data such as pass rushers and blockers, defender in coverage, and identification of play action, screens, and draws.

Please be aware that this data is extremely un-official. It was compiled by volunteers. There is variation in how intricately each charter marked his games. You’re getting the data we have, warts and all.

Format

The file you will download contains 2 Excel spreadsheets with data (Weeks 1-9 and Weeks 10-17), a spreadsheet that contains descriptions of the data categories, and a copy of the license agreement.
If you participated in the game charting project in a significant fashion (at least half the season) you qualify to download this data for free. Please contact Football Outsiders for instructions.

License

Before purchasing the data, please read the legal terms and conditions carefully. You cannot freely distribute the game charting data to others, and any research essay that substantially uses this data must be offered to us for publication before it is offered elsewhere. (You are free to use this data in a college research paper, for example, as long as your essay is solely used to fill class requirements and is not published on a website or in a magazine.)
